Election of Vanuatu Primary Producers' Authority Board today

    VPPA Board will then appoint the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and office bearers of the VPPA Office.

     These provincial representatives are in Port Vila for the VPPA inaugural meeting, opened by the Minister of Agriculture, Willie Daniel Kalo, on Monday this week.

    As primary producers and farmers, they attended the meeting to understand their role within the VPPA governance structure and will also form the Primary Producers’ Provincial Forum.

    In his remarks, Minister Kalo said the primary producers makes up a majority of the population, their voices have not been heard.

    He said the meeting was an opportunity for them to share challenges faced in the productive sector and come up with ways of going forward.

    Minister Kalo said: “VPPA will be your (the primary producers’) house and voice.

    “It will work together with other houses like the Vanuatu Cooperatives and Business Network (VCBN) to support you.

     “The government is committed to support the productive sector.

    “Building food security and food safety has been the focus of the past and current government. This policy has proven itself as our root safety net and social well-being during this global coronavirus pandemic.”

    The VPPA legislation was passed by Parliament in 2018.

    Some of the functions of VPPA are:

    -To present, advocate and promote the sector and its sub-sectors to the general public, the government, aid agencies, and the domestic and international markets as a vital and growing sector of major social and economic significance to Vanuatu;

    -Advocate and promote the collective views of the sector on issues of importance and significance to the sector;

    -Take a strategic approach to maximise the best short and long-term interests of the sector;

    -Engage with the government, aid agencies and primary producers on opportunities for the advancement of the sector, including in relation to the following industry-good activities.
