VPPA Forums elicit recommendations for Gov’t

Recommendations raised during the Vanuatu Primary Producers Authority (VPPA) forums for farmers will be raised to the government level.

VPPA Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Timothy Tumukon, made the statement as VPPA recently hosted the forum in the provinces of MALAMPA and PENAMA.

The forum allowed VPPA to note some of the challenges and recommendations raised by farmers towards the government, through the Ministry of Trade and Agriculture for assistance in upgrading their activities within the primary sector.

Tumukon said VPPA is there to hear farmers’ concerns and bring their voice to the government level.

“After consultations in the provinces of SANMA, TAFEA, SHEFA, MALAMPA and PENAMA, recommendations include financial assistance to improve farming activities and accessing the feeder road program to enable products accessibility.

“Another is for markets to be at the door steps of farmers so they can trade easily. VPPA will keep in touch with farmers in addressing recommendations.

VPPA conducted its recent forum in Nebul, North Ambrym on the 21st-22nd September. A total of 45 participants attended.

Tumukon said VPPA has created 13 different product groups for evaluation.

“We invite different representatives of this groups to attend forums,” the VPPA CEO said.

“My product group is implying on what Vanuatu is producing that is turning into a commercial commodity.

“This is the first ever meeting conducted in Nebul. Participants were keen to participate and present their issues. This forum was interesting because a lot of new issues were raised. Participants come from Paama, Malekula and Ambrym.

“Additionally, we have received requests for VPPA to conduct financial management trainings.”

VPPA also conducted the forum in Loltong, Pentecost on the 23rd-24th of September. About 35 participants from all three islands in PENAMA province attended.
