Product groups

    The Authority has approved the grouping of Vanuatu’s primary products into 13 Product Groups. These groupings are based on information collected from registered primary producers, categorizing similar product types such as root crops or fisheries and aquaculture. To establish each Product Group (PG), the Authority evaluated total production volume and commercial impact, determining whether a single product type (e.g., Kava, Sandalwood) or multiple similar types (e.g., Small Livestock) should form a PG. Primary producers registered under the VPPA are managed within Provincial Primary Product Groups at the provincial level and Area Product Groups at the local level.

    VPPA–PHAMA PLUS COCOA AND KAVA SOLAR DRYER TRAINING WORKSHOP AT AGRICULTURE COLLEGE

    VPPA–PHAMA PLUS COCOA AND KAVA SOLAR DRYER TRAINING WORKSHOP AT VANUATU AGRICULTURE COLLEGE (VAC) starting this week from Monday 17th – Friday 21st 2022. The workshop is organized by Vanuatu Primary Producers Authority (VPPA) and its partner PHAMA Plus. The partnership to organize the workshop is made possible through a MOU which was signed by PHAMA Plus and VPPA in December 2021. These key farmers are chosen to attend the training which helps them to be able to build simple but effective and efficient solar driers and they are given materials to build their own kava and cocoa dryers on their home island. VPPA is grateful also that the Department of Agriculture, The VARTC, the Vanuatu Agriculture College who are also partners in this exercise. It is an exercise to pilot the building of a total 60 solar driers, 40 driers will be for cacao farmers and 20 driers for kava farmers. The farmers were selected from the producers who are members of the VPPA. The materials to build the 60 driers were funded by PHAMA Plus.

    The VPPA Board consists of a representative from each province and four Directors General from the ministries of Agriculture, Trade, Lands, and Finance. The new Board consists of the following officials:

    The board appointed the former Director of the Department of Biosecurity Vanuatu, Tekon Timothy Tumukon as the new Chief Executive Officer of VPPA. Mr. Tumukon was VPPA’s interim CEO until his appointment on 25 March 2021.

    The board also appointed Mrs. Eleanor Kenneth as the Board Secretary and Mr. Pakoa Lui as the Chief Financial Controller. CEO Tumukon oversees the day-to-day management and affairs of the Authority.

    VPPA functions under the direction of its members through the Board, the National Forum, the six provincial forum and area product groups. While it is independently from the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Forestry, Fisheries and Biosecurity (MALFFB), it exists to assist the Ministries of Agriculture and Trades with data and information collation, organizational and coordination and linkages to market.

    Members from each province are elected from their Area Primary Product Groups to represent them at the Provincial Forum, National Forum and eventually one elected member. Ultimate primary producers make the decisions which are eventually endorsed by the Board.

    The Vanuatu Primary Producers Authority is Vanuatu’s primary productive sector organization. It was set up on 25 March 2021 and it has the responsibility to manage, coordinate and improve the business enterprises of mostly the informal, and small primary productive sector players. Our task is to be their voices and to set up the platform and forums where the players (our members) can discuss issues affecting their businesses and to address the issues in a coordinated approach.
